Illucinoma: The evolutionist
24/02/14 || Ironpants
The flying Dutchmen in Illucinoma have released a 4-track EP, and it is pretty cool for being this kind of metal. There are a couple of bands in this circle of modern metal that manages to pull it off with of course Meshuggah being the godfathers and also founders of the djent sound. Meshuggah is good with a handful of peers following in their footsteps. The rest can go and gang-bang each other, cause they bring absolutely nothing that can make me give a noticeable amount of fucks. Illucinoma though, may be allowed to ride in that short bus that follows Meshuggah around. I’m not really that fair in mentioning Meshuggah more than Illucinoma in this review so far, cause they actually aren’t that alike but at least you know directly what kind of style I’m talking about?
The first track ‘Pickled punch’ is a pretty cool song that I actually liked, and the video contains a girl eating flowers = instant win? Maybe not, but never the less, the band shows that they have some qualities that bring stuff to the genre that make them stand out. The other three songs are also well up to par with the first song and there is diversity enough to make me appreciate this.
Illucinoma mixes and matches quite a lot through the songs, but it is technical, polyrhythmic and skilled musicianship that is the main focus here. The skills when you play this style depends on if you can compose something that isn’t total wankery, despite your mastery at your instrument, and I think they pull it off really well.
If you have no problems with this style of metal, I am sure you will find quality music here, and can make a note in your calendar to buy their, most probably, planned full album. Meanwhile, enjoy this EP at their Bandcamp... it actually is good.
